The Challenge

The client needed to hire someone who could wear multiple hats across finance. They were trying to combine the responsibilities of a payroll manager, bookkeeper and accounts officer into one role. This presented a significant challenge in both scoping the position and finding someone qualified to do it.

Previous efforts had stalled due to market confusion around the blended nature of the job. It was unclear whether a candidate with the right skill set existed in the current market. Rather than launch straight into advertising or headhunting, the client needed data to inform whether the role was even realistic.

Our Solution

We began by conducting a quick but targeted market scan to evaluate role viability. Based on mixed availability insights, we advised the client against an immediate headhunt and instead ran a strategic multipronged advertising campaign.

Within a week, we attracted 10 strong applicants with relevant experience across finance functions. We implemented a structured screening process including interviews, assessments and practical evaluations to identify capability and cultural fit.

The top three candidates were invited to complete a tailored, hands-on task replicating work they’d actually perform in the role. This approach provided meaningful insight into each person’s technical ability, judgment and workflow style.
